Canoinhas - City

The ethnic variety of Canoinhas began together with the history of the city. In 1723, the first white man to cross the region, the Spanish Zacarias Cores, gave the name Canoinhas to the local river because of the language of the natives. The Xokleng indians called the river “small canoe”. In the following century, Francisco de Paula Pereira founded the village Vila Santa Cruz de Canoinhas. Separated from the city of Curitibanos in 1911, the city of Canoinhas was the center of the Contestado war, between 1912 and 1916. Because of the plantations of maté (Ilex paraguayensis), the region attracted, in the past, German, Italian, Ukrainian immigrants. In the beginning of the century, Japanese immigrants came to the region. The decadence of the production of maté was due to the lack of technology. The city can be reached by the highways BR-280, SC-477 and SC-303.

Located in the North Plateau of the state of Santa Catarina, near the division with the state of Paraná, Canoinhas is still known the capital of the Erva-mate. Canoinhas has many tourist attractions with an estimated population of 50,000 inhabitants. German, Italian, Polish, Ukrainian and Japanese immigrants have colonized the region and its people are hardworking.

With its roots preserved, the folklore is part of the cultural manifestations in the city of Canoinhas. FESMATE – State Fair of the Maté. Maté Museum, its history is part of the Contestado War.
