São Joaquim - City

On April 1, 1873, the Parish of São Joaquim do Cruzeiro was installed at the district of Costa da Serra. Its founder was an explorer from São Paulo, Manoel Joaquim Pinto. The official ceremony of the foundation of the city was carried out on May 7, 1887.

Population data: 23,000 inhabitants.

Besides the international title of producer of the best honey, São Joaquim is the 3rd largest producer in the state of Santa Catarina, with an annual production of 200 tons. The production of flower pollen, royal jelly and propolis is also important. São Joaquim also produces the famous apples of the varieties Fuji and Gala. It is also a producer of the frescal (salted beef dried in the shadow), mountain cheese, honey and crafts made of pine tree nodes.

One of the main attractions of the city is the snow in the countryside and in the city during the winter months, forming a wonderful spectacle.

The Snow Valley on route SC-438 road, 10 Km from downtown on the way to Serra do Rio do Rastro.

Water falls as high as a 6-torey building, rustic bridges and clean air.

Pirate’s Waterfall with a 15-meter-hight free fall on Rio Postinho. 17Km far from downtown with access from route SC-438 on the way to Bom Jardim da Serra.
